I don't see this as a constraint. Why can't the object be (your preferred) browser window to a chat room? You (can) configure your browser to specify whether to use the internal mail, or your preferred. So, when the object comes up (and yes, I'm assuming a web-mediated interface) in the browser window, it can launch you're preferred (generic) communication tool. Or instructions to go do 'X', whatever X is (use this interface to register yourself in an upcoming session of this f2f activity). That is, I don't see technical limitations that keep you from using your preferred mechanisms for various activities.
