Another important point I have picked up from the pre-discussion document is
the issue of "metadata" and the on-going efforts in defining the "education"
standards of metadata.
Metadata is one of mechanism (albeit important one) in supporting resource
discovery (see http://www.dls.au.com/metadata/DataModel.html for a
theoretical model for resource discovery) and the related standards are
important issues we should not overlook.
Learning Asset (as distinct from Learning Object) is related to application
of metadata (IEEE-LOM). However, I believe that most resources are not
originally created for educational consumption but still may have great
potential for educational use. I shall call these NEF resources. Are NEF
resources learning asset or learning object? Education enabling of NEF
resources relates to identifying potential use, re-purposing and subsequent
discovery of the resource by educators or learners. This is an issue of
re-use. The EOE effort cited in the pre-discussion document is a great
effort in the right direction. However under the model, grouping various
Java Applet (EOE collects them) into a web page for re-use is still
problematic:
-The locking of the underlying technology into Java
-Adapting the content to specific use
-customizing the look and feel
- .... so on.
Any better model (please check out
http://www2.meu.unimelb.edu.au/virtualapparatusframework) and comments
welcome.
cheers
Albert
