I wonder whether it is the classroom that is at fault and whether
it is the book that is at fault. I.e. whether it is the walls and the
book that dictate to us what to do.?

[adamson] I have been investigating learning from the point of view
complexity theory. It is clear that there is a huge number of variables that
effect learning and that there is interaction between these variables so
that it is difficult to obtain the same results twice. As far as I know
there is no complete listing of these variables but the can be collapsed in
a relatively small number of categories:

student related (mood, motivation, prior knowledge, etc)
class related (interactions between class members)
teacher related (personality, skills and knowledge, mood, motivation, etc)
method related (teaching method as actually used in the classroom)
materials related (books, computer software, handouts, etc)
classroom related (physical environment, state and availability of
equipment, etc)
administration related (scheduling, school rules and regulations, class
size, etc)
society related (expectations, social restrictions, cultural boundaries,
etc)

These are all interrelated. For example, the administration may require that
a specific book be used. This will effect the materials variable which will
also be modified by the teacher, who may not use parts of it, and by the
students who find it boring. The materials may also be changed by the
classroom variable because the classroom is to poorly lit for the students
to see the small print in the required text.

In response to Ania's wondering, it would seem that any and all of the
things she listed could be at fault and additionally to be at fault in
different ways at different times and places, because of the values of the
other variables.
