hmmm, maybe things are more complicated. I am in the proces of writing my
bit of a paper which my husband will present somewhere or other on
Tuesday, but I will re-read your mail again tomorrow. On the first reading
though I wonder whether it is the classroom that is at fault and whether
it is the book that is at fault. I.e. whether it is the walls and the book
that dictate to us what to do. I very often feel that what the
computer-based environemnts often do not differ much, or even damage, the
advantages that our students could get from simply exploring (madly) the
library resources. While such an exploration would still preserve
classroom as a meeting place and books as resourcers which may be seen as
rather anti-hypertext in themselves, I would argue that methodology which
empowers students does not necessarily need computers or language labs,
on-line discusssions, etc. That walls are no natural hindrance and that
books-centred methods are none either can be demonstrated through:

(a) cases of home-based schooling which often turn out very effective and
    which take place at home
(b) cases of the past where I am sure there have been good teaching models
developed that gave people life and motivation that school should
    give.

with best wishes
Ania Lian
