Greetings,
The reasons I used the word "tolerance" relate to my status as a pluralist as a social person. I see problems with "positive resistance" when it is applied to different ideologies or beliefs. Example: Two Jewish rabbis and an evangelical Southern Baptist Christian minister debated this point on "Larry King Live" (CNN) earlier this week. The minister explained of his obligation to not only resist non-Christians but also to promulgate Christianity. The rabbis objected to this.
Tolerance requires a duality, intelligently fashioned, that plumbs the depths of specific belief or conviction while concurrently maintaining the capacity to interact in a non-resistant manner, be it positive, negative, passive or proactive. For my part, I will have to stick with "tolerance."
Regards
Muhammad Betz
Dennis Nelson quoted me and wrote:
"Those who align with the existence of objective truths must school themselves in tolerance, creativity, open-mindedness, and understanding, which, after all, is the goal of the relativist." Muhammad B.
Not so much tolerance as I am not the judge, jury and executioner. IF I am to help in the long-term, I cannot respond to actions that bring about undesired results with actions of my own that bring about undesired results. By my better example I might hope to help bring about change, or in the meantime be convinced what I "believed" was not an"objective truth" but rather a "relative truth" and therefore not a truth. so yes, creativity and open-mindedness, but tolerance can infer acceptance rather than positive resistance.
Faithfully,
Dennis
