Concerning learning styles etc.
My experiences as a secondary school teacher, a teacher-educator, and now a
management trainer have left me with the strong feeling that the advantage
of understanding something about human variety (learning preferences, Myers
Briggs, modalities in NLP theory etc) is that it can make it possible to
teach in a more inclusive way; so that each student enjoys a style that
suits them at least for some of the time, and that as far as possible no
student is disadvantaged by my chosen style.
This goes also for "supporting learning" rather than "teaching". It is
possible to move towards a learning environment in which students can
develop in their own way: and can also widen and strengthen their own
learning methods. Making different kinds of resources and interactions
(formal and informal) available is part of this process; and also an
encouragement to students to consider their own approaches to learning and
preferred styles etc. When the student can become an "expert" in the kind
of learning situations that work best for them, they are in a good position
to seek those opportunities.
Of course these are ideals rather than achievables: but they offer useful
direction for the educator as well as the students.
