KAthryn:
Your remarks on distance between teacher and student are interesting to
me because my learning styule is somewhat similar to yours.
I still think that instructors can provide feedback in a flexible way to
match the different learning styles in the group, and should also be
able to provide the freedaom for those who want it. In fact, in
post-secondary education, I would think that the extra marks are for the
students that want to go a bit further and want to do independent
research.
I guess the "transaction" cannot be defined in every case. I may hear
all I need in a lecture without having to ask the instructor. On the
other hand, when my paper is returned to me, I expect more than a letter
grade in glorious solitude at the bottom of the page!
In addition, some strategies for teamwork and discussion can bring out
aspects of the subject that might have gone unnoticed, yet that won't
hamper the student who wants to do independent exploration, nor the one
who likes structure and definition of roles.
