After having read the long mail on the issue, it seems to me that TD is an
attempt to answer the following question:
'How can a teacher facilitate autonomous learning of that which the
teacher wants the learner to know?'
TD theory seems to seek ways of 'keeping hands on the pulse' so that the
arrows are in the right ballance. I just wonder how whoever in control of
the question of ballance knows what does what, where things lead, what is
good, what is enough, and what is too much.
I would of course suggest to give up controlling and ballancing and
focus on the question of the quality of the conditions which would
allow learners to feel that they achieve the goals envisaged when taking
on the course.
As for DE (distance education) issue, I think that there is a need for a
clearer explication of the problems which this environment faces as
opposed to other contexts. From my experience, the specificity of a DE
environment may in fact not be in the difficulty to monitor but in the
illusion that it gives us that just because we see each other in courses
other than DE, we 'can" keep an eye on the ball.
