I don't know of any specific research, however, I believe you could get
statistics directly from INS on the number of student visas issued each
year, and probably a breakdown by country.

What would be difficult to measure would be the decision-making process for
those who have a choice of actually coming to the U.S. or staying at home
and taking courses online. There are those who have a genuine interest in
research, and would not have come to the U.S. but for the need to attend a
particular institution. Such people would be likely to try a distance
learning alternative.

People who would not have qualified for a visa or who could not afford to
travel, or leave their homes may make up some of those taking distance ed.
courses.

Another factor is that some students come simply for the cross-cultural
experience. Some hope to find jobs and change their status to permanent
immigrants. In those cases, they would never say openly that their student
visa request is part of a larger plan to immigrate. The same people would be
unlikely to take distance ed courses because it would not further their
purpose in travelling to the states.

So, determining how many of each type of student there is may be impossible.
Clearly, distance education will be sought by many students around the
world. However, whether that will have an effect on student visa requests
depends on the strength of the other motivations for studying abroad.
