Regarding the role of computer programming in education ,although I am
joining the discussion a little late but I have been following it very
closely.
In our country also internet & web is still a novelty and not all students
have access to to web.
Only students studying in metro cities in good schools have extensive
programming in their curriculum
As far as learning programming at school stage is concerned it is like
asking whether organic chemistry or mechanics or any other subject helps
them or not .After all they may/may not major in any of these areas.
The point is learning any subject widens the perception of the taught and
adds to the learning capability .Also eventually when the child grows up to
major in any area or take it up as a profession we all realise that one
cannot be working with pure chemistry, mechanics or literature .Every area
can benefit by the right application of another supplemental area .
Also programming is esentially a logic development exercise and till date no
subject ( in India) is taught at school level which develops the logical
thinking ability of a student (apart from maths to a certain extent )
