Eric Flescher (Lesley College-multimedia instructor) relates an important
point when he states that " I think it is really important for students to
extend their metacognitive thinking as they interact with simulations and
internet." Often, the mass media criticizes online schools for offering a
superficial education. Eric stresses that computer technology can take the
learner to deeper academic experiences by using pop up windows or screens
that enrich the learning environment. Distance education can be very
intellectually demanding but like traditional settings, it requires teacher
preparation time, having adequate instructional tools and motivated
students. The adult education goal of helping students become more
responsible for their own learning is always a challenge to educators. It
will take some experimentation with different technological tools to
maximize the self directed dimension of learning.
Alejandro Pisanty (Mexico) observes how wireless devices such as mobile
telephones are already transforming student life in Mexico and will have
impact on future technological developments. The current direction of
technology appears to favor mobility which creates a whole new set of
educational possibilities for learning outside the traditional classroom.
