Hi!

re the contribution on MCUs. We are experiencing almost a new revolution,
similar to the one which started when we introduced our first
videoconferencing facilities and MCU in 1994/5, with the introduction of
the H.323 standard (which extends the H.320, applicable to your
description, and which in turn requires dedicated fiber and at least 384
kbps bandwidth reserved continuously) to IP. There you only need your
usual Internet connection and can do with whatever bandwidth available as
long as collisions do not kill you.

The cost reductions that come with the use of H.323 are significant, you
gain a lot of flexibility, and you can connect to the H.320 infrastructure
so that investment is protected too. There are additional requirements of
a gateway and a gatekeeper but usually their costs are in a reasonable
range for interactive-video projects. Consider also that H.324 goes over
POTS and you can be on any desk you choose with a standards-based
solution.
