Nice to see this consideration of affective factors in learning spilling
out from our recent discussions -
My thoughts:
Fear is directly related to Control.
Fear occurs when control is lost.
Control in learning or of learning is, for me, the critical factor.
When control of learning is held by an instructor or a group over one
learner or a group of learners, learning may indeed occur but is likely
to be associated with fear.
Fear is sometimes associated with control being passed from instructor /
facilitator to learner. That is because most learners are accustomed -
and have learned - that it is not their place to be in control of their
learning.
And most teachers are accustomed - and have learned - that control must
be kept. They fear the consequences of control being held by the
learner.
With technology , the fear associated with lack of control perhaps is
exacerbated especially when the instructor actively promotes the sharing
of control of the learning process.
