K-12 education has some responsibility for creating this problem because a
great deal of the interaction in the classroom is based on "Knowing the
answer that the teacher wants" Humiliation and embarrassment quickly become
associated with not having the "right" answer.
An example of this occured recently in my daughter's Grade 8 class. They
were studying the solar system and my daughter's teacher told her she was
wrong in one of her answers. She disagreed. The teacher's response was "You
think you are so smart, what proof do you have?" My very humiliated daughter
pulled out the latest copy of Astronomy from her desk and showed where she
had gotten her info. She came home that night saying she was never speaking
up in that class again even though Science is her favorite subject.

-What matters most is not the moment when the student uses the technology
but how that use promotes improvement in that student's education. - S.
