Fear and Learning:

To me, the most insidious role that fear plays in learning is that it
leads to avoidance behavior. Computerphobia comes readily to mind. But at
all levels and topics, if a student fears a learning experience, that is
believes he or she cannot learn well, it becomes a self-fulfilling
prophecy. If you believe you don't learn languages well, you don't. If you
are intimidated by science, you will avoid hard-core science courses. And
so on. This is the kind of specific belief system that the "self-esteem
movement" in education needs to focus on.

Both learners and teachers need to focus on confidence. If you think you
can, you have a much better chance of succeeding. Certainly, you are much
more likely to try.
