Simon Heppenstall was musing about:
The ArcVenture series of programs allow
children to go back in time and ask questions of characters from the past
regarding artefacts that they have found. Soon, children will learn about
the
Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt by meeting them and talking to them. They will be
able to discuss the causes of the American Revolution with simulated
characters
from the time. They will be able to wander around the moon and look for the
golf ball.
I'm not sure that that's the 'best' use of role-play. I've always loved
adventure games and used them with 10 year-olds back in the 80's on a Video
Genie - but the problem has always been that the student interacts with the
computer (OK - maybe they interact with the author at a distance). What I
think ODL systems can give us is the opportunity to have them interact with
other /real/ people - I know that many of us are trying to work out how this
might be done whilst staying within the limitations of the National
Curriculum and SATs :-/ I know Simon Hostler (I think he wrote some of the
ArcVentures)has been looking at ideas which he's put up on the Argosphere
site. Perhaps a more fruitful way to go would be towards MUDs and MOOs - as
they stand they are probably too free-form to fit in with the NC - but some
hybrid form seems to hold promise.
