Yes Albert,
"Structured play" is how jazz works, right? "Exploration" curricula are more
like the "free jazz" of the Sixties, whereas "structured play" is more like
improvising over standard tunes (ie, mainstream jazz). As in art, in
education there is an accessability issue. My individual exploration is
valid for me. But it remains hermetic. It's not until I acknowledge and work
within community standards that I can connect with others. There needs to be
some rules if we're going to play together! The existence (and transmission)
of standards may be at the very heart of "culture." "Cultural studies"
identifies this as being a sort of continuous cascade of borrowed meanings,
ultimately meaningless. I dare say there are tautologies in their arguments,
but to me our human experience seems to be largely (although maybe not
ultimately) shaped by our community aspect...
Who should pay for what always remains among the key points. As in art, the
more accessible the educational result, the less resistance people will have
to paying for it, which seems reasonable enough. In this sense I would
advocate more resources going to structuring educational activities that
create community than individualistic exploration activities. Open to
comments on how these ideals can be harmonized.
