Hi Nelson,
Glad to see we've struck a chord! What institutions are we talking about
here? When I read Albert's last posting I realized his conception of
"role-play" is quite different from mine. I'm not thinking of assuming an
avatar role in a virtual environment. I'm thinking of assuming a delineated
role as a stake-holder in an educational environment approximating (in a
simplified way) a real complex situation such as labour negotiation. I'm
interested in structuring activities that are open-ended in the sense that
several solutions could be found to a given problem, but close-ended in the
sense that certain proposed solutions don't fit the allowed ranges (as in
real life). I believe that this is how design is done in engineering or
architectural domains. This quantifying approach allows for a certain amount
of valid inference about what learning is happening. Underlining the
importance of defining one's terms! Thanks!
