A well designed role play exhibits a fine balance between the tension and
the relaxation referred to Cenkner (I am with you on this Micheal:-)). The
scenario(s) and social structure defined in the role play provide a
framework. Players have freedom to act within the confirm defined by the
character in the role play. When we have concrete learning objectives in
mind, the challenge is to design the scenarios, the social structure and the
triggering events so that the players will "naturally" arrive at the outcome
as specified by the learning objectives. It seems to me the art of
facilitation in online role play would be as challenging (if not more) as
moderating an online discussion.

cheers
