I hate to do this, but I can't resist. The next discussion is on "ideal
features of online role play software" to be led by me. So stay tuned.

I think we can distinguish between "role play simulation" and "rule-based
simulation". The type of simulation (nuclear reactor) which Anderson
referred to can be grouped as "rule-based simulation" in the sense that a
computer is responding based on some rules set by the simulation designer.
What is being simulated is a physical system in which physical laws apply.
The designer encoded the physical laws into rules and the learners interact
with the computer to "simulate" the meltdown of nuclear reaction. There is
a branch of rule-based simulation for analysing social behaviour. (reference
to be posted if I can find it).
Of course we can have students playing the role of a terrorist or an
engineer trying to recover the system after terrorist attack. We now have a
Role play simulation which has a rule-based simulation to support part of
the activity. :-)
