Greetings to the list and thanks for giving me the opportunity to
discuss with you the ideas in my paper.

The timing for me is neat as I am in the middle of guiding students
through the module at present and am considering how we are managing the
role play on a day to day basis. They have given me permission to quote
from their contributions which I may do as some interesting things are
happening right now. Once again, some of the responses have been made in
what we might call 'thick' dialect - mainly Yorkshire and North-Eastern
English. This seems to have increased the flow and as before has had the
effect of placing the student centre stage and de-centering myself as
tutor - which I would argue is itself conducive to a constructivist
approach to learning. I should say that I do take part myself in role
probably on an equal footing with the group. I should also say that
while there is no compulsion to take part, the students are encouraged
to do so partly by the fact that they do have to evaluate and reflect
upon the kind of learning that has taken place as an assignment. This in
itself promotes cooperation and participation.
Among issues and questions which I trust the members of the list will
raise, I hope we will consider in the forthcoming discussion

   * the status of knowledge which emerges from a constructivist
     learning environment .
   * how critical engagement with text can be enhanced via collaborative
     online interaction
   * whether the 'role play' as outlined in the paper can be considered
     to deepen the learning process
   * the role of the emotions in learning - and whether the emotions can
be tapped in a productive way in online environments.

I am drawn to John Holt, (1977) who suggests in Instead of Education

'Knowledge is action - Knowledge is a process - it is what we do as we
try to find out who and where we are and what is going on about us.

I'm sure this in itself is enough stimulation for our discussions....
