Arthur asked me to expand on what I had said about how working with an
instructional designer could improve teaching. I have a recent Master's
degree in both Educational Technology and Curriculum Development which I
think was a great asset in being able to understand the blend of technology
and the strategies.
In the course development model used at the Saskatchewan Institute of
Applied Science and Technology, I (the instructional designer) am assigned
to help instructors:
* Identify Learning Outcomes and Learning Steps for each course
* Develop Assessment Specifications
* Select Learning Activities (including the best media that matches
the activity)
* Select Instructional Delivery Technology
Here is an example
We recently became involved in the WebCT phenomena and I've been working
with a program that requires critical thinking skills. The instructors were
originally planning on using text based instruction in the content area and
having open-ended discussion in the chat room. By bringing in the
instructional designer (me), a decision was made that the original plan
didn't meet the outcome and interactive case studies, asynchronous
discussions and chat rooms used for small group projects made more sense
(media matching the activity).
Now an instructor experienced in technology and teaching could have done the
same thing, but many instructors don't have this combination. SIAST is in
the process of developing faculty training that includes technology and
pedagogy and I think that is an important key to developing on-line
curricula that is educationally sound.
What matters most is not the moment when the student uses the technology but
how that use promotes improvement in that student's education. - S. Ehrmann
