Regarding the question: What new skills does an on-line instructor
need?
One skill which can be carried over and refined for on-line is questionning.
On-line instruction should be designed so that all the types of questionning are
used, if not in one session, at least over the course of several sessions. By
types of questions, I am referring to:
Factual, i.e., elicits specific information, focuses attention
Provoking, i.e., stimulates thinking, arouses interest, reinforces teaching
points
Multiple answer, i.e., allows more participation, allows comparison of
viewpoints
Yes/No, encourages guessing and leads to other questions
Leading, directs attention, focuses on point
Canvassing, elicits personal information, shows interest, checks understanding
Some of the differences though when using questionning on line are that both
parties will have time to both formulate and answer the questions and feedback
can be elicited to clarify understanding for all. That the questions and
answers can be researched when necessary. And they can be as brief or lengthy
as needed. Some questionning characteristics for instructors remain the same no
matter the medium: Be responsive and polite. Be honest and give specifics,
Admit mistakes, correct distortions.
Of course, we are all aware of these things, but I know sometimes I have to be
reminded to use a lot of types of questions in my instruction.
