Hello Barney and all
I think my purpose in raising the question about web-delivery was 1) to
reply to a question that had been raised in a previous digest and 2) to
suggest some of the things that need thinking about. I didn't intend it as an
implicit criticism, Barney, of what anybody does in practice.
I do work in a context where tech teaching seems poorly ratyionlaised
though and my favourite web technician and I often drawl about this for
hours. We bought into WebCT for example as a platform some 2 years ago
and the mmost it seems to be doing in practice is serving as a fancy
bulletin board for staff. I also work with colleagues (this is outside the
InfoTech department you understand) who still think that lecture dumping
and including hyperlinks is pretty whizzo. Well I think it is if its a personal
challenge you have overcome but not if its supposed to be some
representation of the state of an institutions command of web-based
technology, CBT, or whatever else you want to call it.
Now I am an avid and experienced user of many web-based technologies in
the ESL/Education area including Asymetrix Toolbook, Real Producer,
Markin32 essay marker, HotPotatoes Quiz Suite, Real Slideshow, ICQ,
Web-based PPT97 shows... and run a number of sites in different
locations. But I work in a context where I see too much short-term
(economic) planning and implementation (and consequent waste) of web-
based delivery that lacks any educational or technology sense. So maybe
this background helps explain where I'm coming from.
Keep up the good work/words everybody
