Gavin Melles raised a number of valid points about the placing of lecture
slides on the web. Given that I am doing this and thus am one of the people
implictly subject to criticism, I thought I'd justify my own approach.
I record the lectures I give to my internal students and place the
Powerpoint slides with the recorded audio on a web site. The intention is
that they will be used on campus, through the high speed campus network, by
students who miss the lecture. These maerials on their own are certainly
not the ideal self paced learning resource, but their production is not
resource (equipment or time) intensive. It is a minimalist approach. We
will be evaluating their effectiveness through student surveys shortly to
see who is using them and what benefit if any they are gaining.
I will also be distributing the presentations on CD to distance education
students next year (I agree with Gavin that it is not generally feasible to
deliver this type of presentation over the Internet at large with current
bandwidths). Again these presentations are not the ideal multimedia
self-paced learning resource on their own. They will only be one resource
out of a range of printed and online resources designed to allow learners
to achieve the learning outcomes of the subject in a way consistent with
their own learning styles (eg. some will use the printed copy of the
powerpoint slides along with other readings, some will listen to the whole
lecture presentations, most will probably listen to segments of the audio
where they have trouble understanding particular topics - which Powerpoint
makes quite easy to do).
In summary I agree with Gavin that you need to ask yourself why you might
place presentations online, but I disagree with the implied conclusion that
there is no justification for doing so.
Regards,
Barney
