Ben Hyde characterized this comment by Ken Myers as a sweeping
generalization. And I agree. There are far too many classrooms in this
country for any of us to be sure that we know what's going on, but I can
speak from my own experience. Sure I've sat through some boring college
lecture classes in my day, but I've also been privileged to attend a number
of great academic performances which I remember vividly even 25 years after
the fact. These latter were presented by "great teachers" who were
knowledgeable and passionate about their subject and eager to share it. They
left me stimulated and, well, hungry for more.
I've also participated in and reviewed several on-line courses. Some and
showed thoughtful planning and development, and no doubt comprised an
adequate educational experience. Others were simply automated page turners.
None of the on-line offerings came close to conveying the passion and
intellectual depth that I experienced in the presence of a thoughtful,
knowledgeable lecturer who is passionate about his/her topic. Rather than
being static, those old fashioned lecturers set a high standard, which those
of us in online education will have to work mighty hard to reach.
