Welcome to the IFETS discussion of technology-based learner interface! The
discussion paper offers some initial thoughts and questions and is available at:
http://ifets.ieee.org/discussions/discuss_november2000.html

Postings from the weekend are worth noting:

In response to Ken Meyers [Digest 62]:
I extracted a few statements that, when combined, seem to pose contradictions
between what you suggest may be found in the literature and what you may have
observed of practitioners on the field. It seems from the statement, "What is
clear when you look at the literature is that the areas of effectiveness for
instructional multimedia can be identified and empirically woven", that we could
expect to find models or perspectives of effective use of technology for teaching
and learning. But another statement, "If there is any danger ....it is a failure
to recognize what computer can and cannot do effectively with or without human
assistance", seems to come from a recognition of classroom practice issues,
further enhanced by " For the majority of situations, no comprhensive design was
done to assign appropriate portions of the instruction to the most effective
delivery and evaluation component". Could you clarify Ken? And for everyone:
What are the implications, as David Wiles suggests, for a discussion of
methodology, whereas we may raise the question "To what extent, if any, does
computer use, teacher training, and test format very systemaitcally and together
in facilitating or retarding the 'best' direction of expectations?".

Thanks.

Art

ps Please post with "Tech Interface" in the subject heading. This will assist
with summarizing the discussion.
