my K-12 district is implenting over the next five years an online community of practrice funded by the National
Science Foundation (NSF). NSF funded SRI International's development of TAPPED IN....They are in California and we are
in Virginia. We will form a East-West Alliance...SRI will put a Newport News Public Schools face on our building--
virtual learning environment.. We have 2400 teachers who have all been issued laptops and home Internet connections.
Our builiding will have serval floors and many different offices and meeting rooms as well as private offices for each
teacher. We plan to offer asynchronous and syschromous professional development as well as a Community Help Desk,
After School Online, Meet Me mailing lists, Clearing House for University Online courses and a rich array of
resources. The CoP will support online tenants..our many partners and other resources to teachers.Tenants will
schedule time so that teachers willbe able to access them from the classroom. The teahers computer screen will
indicate which tenants are online at any given time...much like buddy groups in Instant Messaging.....
We think that TAPPED IN will give us what we need to help our teachers coalesce into a professional community.
