Dear Discussion Group -
On the topic of Virtual Learning Environments, part of the problem is many
folks are looking at this as THE WAY to deliver instruction. Different
learners react negatively to certain environments and this can adversely
affect learning. While a certain topic may be dispersed easily through a
VLE (Imparting knowledge) other topics that require skill development may be
more difficult to do in a VLE. It cannot be looked at as the "wave of the
future" entirely.
I work with practicing educators everyday that have knowledge but not the
skills to incorporate technology into their classrooms. While they could
technically be taught the Internet Skills via a VLE, they would not choose
that way of learning. They still need one on one reassurance and comfort
level to allow them to acquire the new skills and knowledge they will need
in their classrooms.
Perhaps the students of today who have used computers since preschool will
be more comfortable with VLE's. The VLE design for those already in the
workforce perhaps should be different.
