My announcement that Jossey-Bass Publishers has sold On the Horizon to
Camford Publishing and that Camford has appointed Tom Abeles as the new
editor has caused some confusion. Several colleagues have asked me what I
would be doing now that I was no longer an editor; some have sent Tom
articles that were meant for The Technology Source.
The confusion stems from the fact that both On the Horizon (OTH) and The
Technology Source (TS) are currently on a Web site called "Horizon" and
that I serve as editor of both periodicals (at least until April 20).
Confusion may also result in the fact that TS focuses on integrating
information technology tools in educational organizations, which is a
driving force that will affect how we will live and work in the future. TS
publishes articles that could also be published in OTH and vice versa (at
least under the format that I used when editing OTH). Indeed, I would
sometimes interchange articles to enable more timely publication.
However, On the Horizon and The Technology Source are two distinct
publications. The only links between them are that I founded both, serve
as editor of both, and both currently reside on the Horizon server at
UNC-Chapel Hill. As noted above, there is some overlap in the mission of
each, since technology is a driving force that is affecting and will
continue to affect education in the future. However, the major consequence
of Jossey-Bass selling On the Horizon is that after April 20, OTH Online
will no longer be available on the Horizon server. It will be available on
the Camford site. My OTH title will become editor emeritus; my role will
be as advisor. Tom Abeles' title will be editor, and he is currently
soliciting articles for the next OTH issue (May-June 2000).
The other consequence is that I now have more time to focus on The
Technology Source, to develop the Horizon site as a valuable information
database for educators, and to smell a rose or two every now and then.
I do want to assure you that TS is alive and well, getting about 15,000
visitors per issue. It is a free refereed Web publication available at
http://horizon.unc.edu/ts
Please consider TS as a publication outlet when developing manuscripts
that focus on how educators may be using information technology tools to
enhance their work in the future.
