> 6. ALN Workshops: We offer an on-line workshop about "Getting Started
> Creating On-line Courses." This three module on-line workshop teaches how
> to create on-line courses using Microsoft FrontPage and other advance
> media ... http://www.aln.org/GS_jan99
>From the web page it appears to be entirely about the technology - how
to use Frontpage to make web pages; how to set up discussion groups,
etc. It makes me wonder, is there something here about using this medium
for education?
I am concerned about the lack of pedagogical depth in what I see many
people doing with ALN/DL - that you just put class notes, assignments,
and discussion groups on the web and voila! you have an effective
learning experience. I belive there is a need for workshops that focus
on understanding how the technology can and cannot function as
pedagogical tools -- on matching learning objectives and needs to the
interactive experience afforded by each medium, and also recognizing the
limitations of the standard set of ALN/DL tools, which might lead to
more pressure for development of better online learning environments.
These workshops are conduced by Vanderbilt - I'm sure that the Learning
Technology Center at Vanderbilt could help a lot here.
