The best vacation I took was in 1994, when I got in the car and drove. I
ultimately covered 3500 miles in a week in upstate New York and throughout
New England. The only time I consulted a map was about 3 pm each day to
figure out where I was and where I could stay for the night. I learned a
lot about the beauty of the region and a lot about myself. I just thought
in whatever direction my thoughts went. I think it's doubtful I could have
planned this and stuck to a compass heading.
