Dear Arun

My experience with running multimedia operations management tutorials
is that the students are motivated and excited, at least initially. I
am less sure about what they actually learn, but this can also be
said of traditional tutorials/lectures. I do think it helps to bring
the subject matter to life and and increases their overall enthusiasm
for the course, which is something not to be sniffed at. However
student surveys reveal that the majority still want a tutor to be on
hand to answer questions and prefer a 50:50 mix of traditional and
multimedia tutorials. Some of these issues may be partially overcome
through better design, chat forums etc. but I still feel there is a
great need for the human face. Currently I see multimedia
applications as enhancing the traditional learning process but
definitely not replacing it in university settings. Where I do see
more potential is outwith the university e.g. small and medium
enterprises and individuals who need flexible learning. The big issue
here is changing the learning culture so that the need becomes a
want.
