I see much of this discussion revolves around the qualitative choices we
make in deciding which technology we as teachers will use. Those who choose
the teaching methodology need to be open to the idea that in certain
circumstances older technologies may offer higher quality learning
experiences than newer technologies. Mike Collett's phrase "people are the
network" captures the idea nicely (though it runs counter to the rest of
his argument that we will naturally gravitate to using the latest
technology). If people want to network, they choose for themselves which
medium is the most appropriate. Some may prefer cocktail parties, others
conference, some online chat. Cocktail parties, conferences or online chat
do not determine the networks. I think we need to be wary of any
proscriptive notion that students need newer technologies because it will
make them learn/collaborate.
