Dear Dr Kinshuk

My name is Malcolm Field and I have just entered the University of
Cambridge in the doctoral program. I am an Australian who has been
living in Japan teaching English for the past five years. My Masters
addressed the social and cultural factors that Japanese encounter when
they learn English. This led into my interest in IT and its affect on
the individual and/or the culture. For example, do the Japanese need
to change, or do they change, and if so, what are the effects on the
culture and on the individual when the individual or the culture uses
IT? Similar issues were addressed when TV was introduced into the
society as a whole. However, TV information was very much controlled
by TV magnates, governments etc - as is happening in China for
example. This may change with the widespread intoduction of cellular
and satellite phones. For the Japanese, however, there is currently no
restriction on use and accessible information on the Internet and
through e-mail. This may begin to change the balance of 'global'
information within Japan, and may lead to a greater empowerment of the
individual.
Furthermore, what are the social and psychological changes within the
individual when they use IT? Are they the same person or is a latent
personality, more willing to express and communicate information and
opinions, that which is traditionally not promoted within the Japanese
society, being expressed? If so, what could be the implications for
the wider social structure and culture?

So, in a nutshell, that is the kind of thing I am interested in and
hope to pursue with my PhD.

Regards

malcolm Field
