Two years ago I did a research project on automated instructional
design software. We surveyed about 500 instructional designers
who were members of the American Society of Training and
Development's Instructional National Technology Forum.
Here are some results you might find interesting: (All are
given in rank order based on data analysis)
WHY WOULD YOU USE A PEDGAGOGICAL TOOL?
(1) Convenience
(2) Time saved
(3) Ability to make simulations easier
(4) Costs
(5) Update ability
(6) Distance education
(7) Record keeping
WHY DO YOU NOT USE A PEDAGOGICAL TOOL NOW?
(1) Lack of knowledge
(2) Costs
(3) Time involved
(4) Not applicable to the current project
(5) Required learning curve
(6) Already outsource
(7) Fear of technology
PERCEIVED BENEFITS FROM USING A PEDAGOGICAL TOOL?
(1) Save time
(2) Consistency
(3) Improve the instructional design
(4) save costs
(5) equipmt SME to design instruction
(6) Make revisions easier
DESIRABLE FEATURES IN A PEDAGOGICAL TOOL?
(1) Templates
(2) Branching
(3) Feedback
(4) Providing HELP to learner
(5) Ability to import graphics
(6) Ability to distribute education globally
(7) Reporting capabilies
(8) Animation
(8) Test shells (tie)
CONCERNS EXPRESSED BY INDIVIDUAL RESPONDENTS
(1) Too much cookie cutter look will limit creativity. The
resultsing CBT would be too dry, boring, and dull"
(2) Too resitricted -- If you do not want to
take the time to do a good job, outsource it"
(3) "They are good for SME but not for IDs"
(4) "They are too basic for what I do now."
(5) "It will lead to less robust CBT. Everything
will have the same look and feel. It removes
creativity from the process and artificially boils
instructional design to a few basic principles,
which can not possibly replace good ID."
---------------------------
A significant number of respondents (97%) indicated
they would consider using automated instructional
design tools for future projects.
