In response to Dr. Erlich's query as to those who might be replacing f2f
with technology when working with less experienced students, I am a
professor of developmental reading at a community collge in southern
Illinois. This semester I introduced a web component to my course and
currently have five sections that are using this new technology.
Since this is a community college, the experience of my students (all
first-semester freshmen) is varied. Those who come directly from h.s.
are often computer literate, while the older, non-traditional students
are often afraid of the technology. My approach, however, has not been
to totally replace f2f contact with students. In my program, this would
be a disaster given the nature of my students. And I believe this
should always be the bottom line. Know your students well enough in
order to carefully select your technology.
I use the web course for assignments, access to reading materials and
learning strategy sites at several universities, and for forums which
involve the classes in discussions of topics critical to the course.
I'm four weeks into the semester and pleased with the results. There
has been an incredible amount of work involved in planning, creating,
and organizing, but I believe it's paying off. Students appear more
motivated and there is a dialogue going on I've not experienced before.
Would I use the web to replace all f2f? Never, not with my program. As
it is, I've given much support - orientations, job aids, and my students
have access to a computer lab with support personnel who know what the
students need.
