Although it may seem obvious, the transformation of this discussion from
getting numerous E-mails to a digest only mirrors some of the problems
educators are facing. We haven't anticipated the volume of dialogue or
anticipated the threads of discussion; therefore, we need to change the
way we percive communication among discussants or students. In teaching
a web-enhanced course for adults the replacement of f2f discussion with
CMC required some preparation we had not expected. Some of our students
(and that may not be true of the 20-30 year olds) had little or no
exposure to communicating via E-mail, listservs or chat rooms. We
needed to take a step backward (maybe a couple of steps) and work with
these students. Others are extremely computer literate and engaged in
discussing cases and interacting immediately. We have added additional
support for the less experienced students, but we also have concentrated
on creating a "learning community" by having students submit biographies
and taking photos and putting them on-line; my style was faciltitate
before integrating technology, but has to be really well thought out
now. Also we needed to require releases from students because of
university policy.
How are those of you working with less experienced students dealing with
integrating technology or replacing f2f commuincation in training or
academic institutions? We don't use tutors in our courses in the US.
