Staff development is an interesting issue because so many of us are not
too technology literate and many of the faculty development initiatives
don't deal with the design issues. One of our courses is going online
this term and we are dealing with several initiatives: communication
between faculty and student, interactions among students, how to deliver
content best using as much interactivity as possible (case studies,
etc.) and how to deal with the interface.
We're having students keep journals as they go through the experience;
this course is web-enhanced rather than completely web-based because
we're not sure how successful it will be and frankly, as the professor
in the course, I want to make sure that students deal with the content
rather than the technology. Access through our university systemn seems
to be one problem that has come up already..not everyone seems to be
able to get online. so too is the issue of students not familair with
the technology--this may not ably to younger students, but many of our
students are returning adults and need to have several no-threatening
short experiences with the computer. Dr. Diane Ehrlich Northeastern
