FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AUGUST 15, 1998:
MAYOR OF WELLINGTON TO PRESENT KEYNOTE ADDRESS FOR GLOBAL LEARN DAY II
Mark Blumsky, the Mayor of Wellington, will contribute a keynote address to
the opening ceremonies of Global Learn Day II, a worldwide event on October
11 featuring the elite of distance education.
Global Learn Day II will be "part expedition, part exhibition, part
experiment and all conference" according to Linda Riddell communications
director for the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Global Education who
organize the event.
"It promises to be a landmark event in education history," she says.
"We are particularly pleased to be linking up with Mayor Mark Blumsky in
Wellington, which is the first 'port of call' for Global learn Day II.
Wellington City Council have initiated many major information technology
projects in recent years to ensure that Wellington is one of the most
'wired up' and 'switched on' cities in the southern hemisphere."
Mark Blumsky is very much looking forward to linking up with the Mayor of
Guam for Global Learn Day II. "It's a great opportunity for some global
schmoozing," he says.
"Wellington will be the first capital city in the world to see the sun rise
on the new millennium and Guam is the first city in the USA to see it, so it
makes sense for us to link up and have a chat."
Mark has been Wellington's personable Mayor since 1995. Young, exuberant and
a gifted off-the-cuff speaker, he first made his name in shoes. Starting as
a salesperson for New Zealand shoe giant Hannahs, he quickly rose to become
national sales manager and then in 1991 left to found his own chain of shoe
stores, Mischief. Amongst other things, he is a past chairperson of Capital
Marketing (a regional promotions organization), past president of the
Wellington Retail Association and remains a director of Mischief (not to
mention the lingerie outlet Bustop).
