hello all,
I think Vilnis made some excellent points from a pragmatic instructional
design perspective about the value of ITS in the classroom, and perhaps
about the direction for this discussion. I have been studying
knowledge-based systems for quite a while now and from the perspective of
real tools to enhance learning I mostly see technologically-driven research
artefacts in well-structured and/or toy domains. However I personally think
that there is a role for user-model based educational software in
instruction, as I think student knowledge is an important component of
effective teaching and learning. However, ITS are far from being ready to
take a new leap into classrooms, particularly I believe for young learners.

I suppose by 'laughter' we are meaning engagement & interactivity and the
role of computer games in learning is being considered, right? For young
students, I do not make the distinction between play and learning. When a
child plays they *are* learning.

Regards,
John
