I have been interested in computer applications to education since I
created a special project undergraduate major (equivalent to an honours
thesis) in Computer-Based Education in 1979. I worked designing and
programming educational computer games on the Apple II, Atari 400/800,
TRS-80 (shudder) and IBM PC's. I went back to university for a PhD in
cognitive psychology/science with Donald Norman after hearing his call for
a 'cognitive engineering' (though I now think 'cognitive design' is more
appropriate). After finishing in 1989,I've been pursuing that approach in
interaction design and educational technology, first with a two year stint
as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pittsburgh's Learning
Research and Development Center. I'm currently holding a fractional
position in the School of Computer Science at the University of New South
Wales and working as Director of Education Technology at Access CMC. The
latter position means doing a lot of things like designing commercially
viable online learning, developing a learning effectiveness evaluation
service for educational technology, and managing our website.

I'm still interested in educational computer games, er, engaging learning
environments. My theoretical position is that engagement and educational
effectiveness are mutually reinforcing, if done properly. I think
understanding reflection is critical in generating transfer, and am
interested in the role of adaptive (ie intelligent) systems in supporting
that. -- Clark
