Dr Kusick

I don't know who should be suggesting discussion topics but I would like to
make the following suggestion.

I am a great convert to the use of the web and web browsers for all manner
of things. As I mentioned in my introduction I feel they have many benefits
such as 1) ease of use, 2) the majority of people are familiar with their
appearance and are happy with the hyperlink concept at their root, 3)
plug-in technology means that you can run many commercial programs inside a
web browser, 4) java, javascript means that you can write your own programs
and run them inside a web browser, 5) with the forthcoming improvements in
HTML their general applicability will increase.

Much teaching will now be done at a distance hence we need to ensure our
methods are capable of easy dissemination and can achieve effective learning
which is the major aim of this discussion group, but I think there is a one
point which I think should be addressed first. I would like to suggest that
we standardise on a web browser as a delivery platform. I am suggesting this
to find out what others think and to see if we can come to some agreement on
this. I know this will suit some people and not others but I don't know the
numbers involved. I think that this will be one of the initial decisions we
will have to make and if we can decide on delivery methodology at the outset
it will make it development of teaching methods simpler.

I know there are many strongly held views out there and it would be
interesting to hear these. Some have already been addressed eg the
unnecessarily glitzy nature of current web pages which increase download
time and reduce bandwidth for no increase in intellectual content. However,
I feel that the disadvantages can be easily avoided and the advantages,
mentioned above, far outweigh any notional disadvantages. If Dr Kusick is
amenable to this then perhaps we could air this topic and see if there is
any common ground.
