In the early and middle years of learning (and assuming that there is
general agreement on the basic stuff worth learning [reading, writing and
such]), the absense of a guide (analogy to finding one's way in the
wilderness intended) significantly raises the risk of failure (although by
no means ensures it).
In the later years of learning, the absense of a guide may not have an
effect on success or failure, but it may have an effect on richness, depth,
insight, scope and efficiency of learning. I do not assume the effect is
only beneficial - it could cut both ways.
The best guides are the best learners. With some luck and perseverance,
I'll become so accomplished at learning that I will cease to teach and
mature into an effective guide.
