I didn't think there is any question that there are both good and bad
teachers in the classroom. The question is, as I understand it, how do we
ensure we are teaching people to become good teachers? If, as Wendy Lowe
suggests, that good teachers are born not taught, then the answer is
obviously to statistically exclude a certain section of the population from
becoming teachers. But this is a point for accreditation rather than
teaching teachers
I think the challenge for teacher educators is to "walk the walk". Either
we believe in education and therefore we educate future educators, or we
train future teachers with skills which is likely to be out of date in a
few years. Alan Stromberg's point on transferable skills applies just as
much to teacher training. After all the next line to his adage is, "and
those who can't teach, teach the teachers".
