Life Long Learning.
I spent 17 years as a university faculty member, so I understand why
academics tend to approach ideas like Life Long Learning in warm, glowy,
humanistic terms.
The harsh reality from the business side is that I must keep up with
technology in order to increase productivity so that I can compete in the
marketplace.
If I am a world-wide corporation expecting to save $12 million a plant with
non-destructive weld testing, I am going to use the most effective means
possible to train my personnel. I will not be concerned about discovery
learning, constructivism, collaboration, or any of those other warm, glowy
strategies. I want workers to do it my way, following my assigned schedule,
using my proscribed procedures. I will describe, explain, demonstrate and
provide practice. My expected return on investment will provide a very
generous budget for whatever imagery, hands-on tools, or technology is
required. Evaluation will tell me when I am done. The bottom line as
reported to stockholders will tell me whether my investment paid off.
