I think it is dangerous to chracterise learning which des not stem from a
"managed learning style" based on content objectives ( following say the
work o Maker or Gagne) as discovery learning (Ken Meyers). Equally I
dislike the use of "discovery learning" as a pejorative term.
There are many more ways of organising and structuring learning.
"Authenticity". An authentic learning experience does not preclude that
which is not a practical first hand experience. Nor does it preclude the
learning of obscure knowledge. I have and education in Classics, and it was
one of the most authentic parts of my education. My teacher ensured that it
was a real exploration of the mechanics of (the) language alongside the
ways that those mechanics could be used to construct poetry. I know many
other Latin students learned the requirements of the exam... like
translations of De Bello Gallico... and probably got higher grades in the
exam. I still use my Latin 35 years on.
