I can't share Wendy Lowe's conviction that "much of what makes a teacher,
an explainer, a mentor, is somehow inborn". It implies that there is some
unchanging natural standard of good teaching, shared by the lucky few. What
is considered good teaching is a changing concept. Just a generation ago it
was behaviourism, now we consider this as bad teaching.
To generalise from my interviews with recognised good teachers (ie they
have won an award), I would say a good teacher is someone who actually
cares that their students learn. It will be a sad day if we accept that
only a certain section of the population is capable of caring.
