focused on the practitioner and not on the learner."

In answer, I would like to extend Dennis R. Nelson's observation:

"and they may be us: all of us -- each with our own particular niche".

It is a great opportunity that teacher education is an explicit alignment
between (student) teacher and learner (student). I try to make it clear to
participants in my workshops that they should look closely at the way I am
teaching and decide what bits helped them learn. I get the most complaints
when we use small group work to discuss lectures. Surely, I'm told, I
should be giving a lecture on effective lecturing (ie practice what you
preach).

I can't think of any other discipline where theory and practice is so
closely intertwined. As Bob Leamnson points out in surgery or aeronautics,
practice needs to take precedence for the sake of safety etc. In teacher
education I try to make this alignment a virtue.
