Hi All,
My name is Roz Brennan and I am a
lecturer in Vocational Education and Training at a large provincial
University in NSW Australia. I ,for the most part, read and lurk on the
edges of these stimulating debates..

My students are all studying in the distance education mode with on line
enhancements. They come from a huge variety of life and work backgrounds and
indeed they have some sets of very clear ideas about what they would like
to learn and the outcomes they would like to achieve. Beside these
preferences and desires we need to place our responsibilities as educators
to stretch and extend their knowledge ;facilitate their learning ;and
provide the scaffolding for their future learning when the security of
university study has been removed from them. The art of teaching has become
more complex in this new medium and the balance between independence and
guidance requires more thought and reflection both in terms of content and
process.

I also find it fascinating to learn from my students .The equation becomes
one of people learning together rather than one person imparting knowledge
or simply replying to the requests of the students in a functional and
mechanistic way. The elliptical process of learning ,and the building of
knowledge and skills then becomes self reinforcing for all the
participants in the learning adventure.

Regards

Ros Brennan
